Scalded!

Friday, June 6th, 2003

I scalded myself for the second time this week. The first was several days ago where I spilled piping hot water on my lap while making cereal. There are two large blisters to remind me of that accident. Today I filled the thermos flask to the brim. While I was pouring away the excess water, I scalded my left hand. I quickly ran tap water over it for several minutes and then soaked it in cold water and ice cubes.

I am aware of the risks associated with handling hot water while on a wheelchair. I have been very cautious but sleep deprivation numbs the senses and impairs judgement. Luckily, there is no serious injury this time. Even though the water is hotter this time, there is no blister, which is a good thing because my left hand is my good hand. If it had been injured, I would have to get help with the housework.

Housework is no fun but it is good therapy. This should have been part of my rehabilitation many years ago. I am not complaining though. I have enjoyed those pampered years. Now, I am learning some new things everyday. This is not only good therapy for my hands but mentally stimulating as well.

Housework and Good Neighbours

Thursday, June 5th, 2003

Nineteen years of shirking housework has finally caught up with me. I have not done any housework since the day I broke my neck, not that I have done much prior to that. As Mum is still indisposed, I have taken over the tasks of preparing beverages, cooking simple meals, doing the laundry and washing dishes simple tasks that are sometimes challenging due to the weakness in my hands.

However, I have exceptionally helpful neighbours in Mr. Tan, Soon Leong and his wife who helps out with the more arduous housework like mopping the floor, hanging the laundry and buying groceries. Soon Leongs wife has been cooking lunch for Mum and I for several months now. Mr. Tan usually buys dinner and occasionally lunch too. I am fortunate to have neighbours like them.
