Basically one end is attached to the camera and the other anchored to the ground, very much like how you would a tripod. It does reduce camera shake significantly but does not eliminate it totally. It all depends on how well you use it to your advantage. I have not really tested it yet. The Manfrotto that I liked was too bulky and heavy and made my little digicam looked out of place. I am using this monopod mostly for low light and night shots. It is an unbranded monopod.
