Lucia,
Hokkien mee and char koay teow are one of the many. I love Nonya food and most of them use ingredients I am supposed to avoid or eat in extreme moderation. So I have to make the difficult decision whether I like food or my health more. Sometimes this can be tough especially when everyone else is enjoying their food while I have to restrain myself.

I am on a renal-friendly diet, not light diet, which comprises two servings of protein daily with no restriction on carbohydrates and fruits. On top of that, I am cutting down on salts, red meats, beans and certain types of vegetables to reduce my serum uric acid.

Dear Peter
The information you have on here is useful for everyone. The taste and craving for certain types of food is acquired from young. There are food we associate with "comfort", such as Hokkien Mee.
With time, we can adjust, but the feeling of missing something could arise from time to time. (ask any ex-smoker!) I managed to live without prawns - high cholesterol, but if I go without coffee for a day, I'll have a headache.

Take care!
