I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud

Monday, March 28th, 2005

Pauline introduced me to that beautiful verse of this entrys title many months ago. It is the beginning of William Wordsworths poem called Daffodils that was written in 1804. I had not thought about it much, until today.

I was sitting in the living room blog hopping and listening to Kenny Rogers. A steady stream of cool wind was blowing in through the bedroom window. I strained my neck to peek out from where I was and caught glimpses of clouds. Grey and white and many hues in between were splashed across the sky. Rain is imminent as has been for the past week.

Throughout the day, the sun had been shrouded. An air of gloominess pervaded. This exacerbated the sense of lonesomeness that has been lingering for the past few days. Then they are some issues that I need to address with some urgency but am unable to. All those weighed me down to such an extent I felt burdened beyond my abilities. I was depressed and I did not know what to do.

And I thought about the clouds, lonely as they were, the wind would eventually lead them to another billowy mass to form an even bigger one. That reminded me of this poem and I went looking for it and read it, not once, but again and again until I could actually see those golden blooms swaying in waves and waves under the breath of the gentle breeze that swept across the field.

For a while, the load seemed to have been lifted off me as I stood there in the middle of the wide expanse, feeling the zephyr caressing my cheeks. My hair wafted as merrily as the dancing daffodils. I let it be, making no effort to restrain them. In that field, I was void of worries and enjoying the pleasures of the moment.

I closed my eyes. A smile crossed my face. The simple pleasure of reading such an uplifting poem did wonders. Those words, they reached out and coloured an otherwise gloomy day the brilliance of an English poet who composed it two centuries ago. Today, those imageries that so inspired Wordsworth are still alive and spreading cheer. My heart was full of happiness again.

The Daffodils
By William Wordsworth

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed–and gazed–but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Gabriel

Saturday, March 26th, 2005

The beginning of a journey should always be preceded by beautiful expectations. Mine began with the baptismal name of Gabriel, named after St. Gabriel the archangel. He is the messenger of God and one of the three angels mentioned by name in the Bible. St. Gabriel is the Patron Saint of Communications, Postal Workers, Messengers, Broadcasters and Telecommunications.

Gabriel appeared twice before Daniel (Daniel 8:16-26, 9-21), one of them foretelling the coming of the Messiah. He appeared before Zechariah (Luke 1:11-20) to announce the birth of John the Baptist. Finally he told Mary (Luke 1:25-38) that she had been chosen to conceive Jesus.

The name Gabriel was chosen for its significance in meaning. The first time I prayed with all my heart, God answered but not what I had asked for. He gave me a beautiful vision that will be cherished for as long as I live instead. He pulled me up when I was drowning in a sea of sorrows. He gave me strength when I was at my weakest. God is my strength that is what Gabriel means in Hebrew.

Peter Gabriel, I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Those were words most sweet that ever came into my ears. This name is in honour of Him who had given me a renewed vigour in life and beautiful expectations of what is to come. My strength will always come from Him. Praise God, for I have seen the Light and heard the Word.

In the beginning was the Word:
the Word was with God
and the Word was God.

Global Voices: Jeff Ooi and Mack Zulkifli Interview

Saturday, March 26th, 2005

Mack Zulkifli’s entry IRC Interview of Malaysian Bloggers caught my attention. This open interview concept is interesting. Rebecca MacKinnon, a journalist who was formerly with CNN, was to interview Jeff Ooi and Mack Zulkifli via the Internet Relay Chat. Audience participation was encouraged after the interview proper. What transpired during the session was an eye opener. Read the transcript.

Mack has an entry on me titled A Malaysian on a global soapbox. Rebecca MacKinnon has also put up two entries on me. Perspective on Schiavo from a Malaysian Roman Catholic is an entry in her blog RConversation. The other Introducing Peter Tan is at Global Voices Online.

The introduction at the site states that “Global Voices is an international effort to diversify the conversation taking place online by involving speakers from around the world, and developing tools, institutions and relationships to help make these voices heard.”

Jeff Ooi and Mack Zulkifli were given the honour to be in the inaugural Global Voices Online interview. Evidently Malaysian bloggers like them are not only creating waves at home but globally as well. This is reason enough for us to be proud. Hopefully this will spur more local bloggers to write about issues that matters.

The Things People Say

Friday, March 25th, 2005

Me: Good morning aunty.

Aunty: Good morning, where are you going?

Me: Church. Today is Palm Sunday.

Aunty: Oh, when were you baptised?

Me: Last Easter Vigil.

Aunty: Good, good. Congratulations. Which church do you go to?

Me: Holy Spirit.

Aunty: Where is that?

Me: Green Lane.

Aunty: All the churches are the same. We all pray to the same God, except the Catholics - they worship Mary.

Me: I am a Roman Catholic.

Aunty: Oh! Err…

Is there really a necessity to blow out another light to let yours shine? I wonder what Jesus would have said had he overheard this conversation. Like all other denominations of Christianity, Roman Catholics worship God and God only. How can there be unity in Christendom when there are those who try so hard to point out the differences but fail to see that we are similar in more ways than one?
