See this Sign?

Friday, June 24th, 2005

The sign outside one of the toilets in Suria KLCC.

There is a reason why toilets for the disabled are locked nowadays. I know for certain those in Berjaya Times Square and Suria KLCC are. Those are among some of the cleaner toilets I have used. Many who are not entitled to use such amenities continue to insist on misusing them in the name of convenience. Oftentimes the toilets that were not locked were dirty and vandalised. This deprives those whom the toilets were intended for from using it. I applaud the complex managers in putting a stop to such brazen misuse. At the same time, it is disappointing to be note that such measures have to be implemented. This proves that civic consciousness is still sorely lacking in our society.

Happy 2nd Anniversary PPS!

Thursday, June 23rd, 2005

Image from Project Petaling Street.

It has been a good two years. Thank you to the core group who hatched the idea of creating an aggregator so that Malaysians have a platform to showcase their blogs. Special thanks go to Aizuddin Danian for his selfless work in maintaning PPS and now in organising a party that will be remembered in Malaysian blogosphere for a long time to come.

The success of PPS is also through the effort of bloggers who ping PPS. We are indeed a motley band of people with diverse interests but are coming together because of our one passion - blogging. In many ways, we have contributed to a better society by helping each other out whenever there is a need. Lets continue doing that in a responsible and constructive manner.

HAPPY 2nd ANNIVERSARY PPS. May there be many more.

Blackout at Suria KLCC

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2005

Suria KLCC Center Court in partial darkness.

There was a blackout at Suria KLCC at 7:15 pm just now. Wuan and I were shopping at Isetan. The lights suddenly went off. All was in darkness. We managed to find out way out. The corridors outside were lit though. The elevators were not operational. We were stuck at Level 1 for a while. There was no way for me to get the the Ground Level. Power was fully restored by 8:00 pm. By then, many shops had already locked their doors because of the power failure.

Blatant Abuse of Disabled Toilets

Tuesday, June 21st, 2005

Berjaya Times Square has some of the cleanest disabled toilets anywhere in Kuala Lumpur. The floors are dry and the wash basins and water closet bowls are clean. One has to look for the janitor to unlock the door. This is a tad inconvenient but that little effort in hunting for the janitor is worth the cleanliness.

When asked why the doors are usually locked, one of the janitors said, “Orang tak sakit pun mahu guna.”

I have had to use many disabled toilets that are disgustingly filthy. Some have doors that cannot be locked, water closet bowls that are not flushed, grimy wash basins and floors that are wet. Some have been vandalized. The abuse of disabled toilets is a despicable act. It deprives the people who really need to use it the convenience. Those are the only toilets that the physically disabled can use and they are far and few in between.

Some people are simply too lazy to walk those extra step to use the normal toilets. This is ironic. By selfishly disregarding the purpose the disabled logo was put there in the first place, it would have caused inconvenience to people like me should we need to use it. Several times, I have had to wait to use one only to see the person using it before me walking out without showing signs of physical impediment.

Last week, after I got out from the disabled toilet and asked the janitor to lock the door, one middle-aged lady rushed in after me. Her friends asked her why she was using that particular toilet, pointing to the huge disabled logo on the door. She simply mumbled that the disabled toilet can also be used. I looked at the janitor. She shook her head. I replied with a sympathetic smile.

Bloggers ‘r’ Us

Monday, June 20th, 2005

Look who is gracing the front page of Star Two today. Suanie of As Suanie Sees It is featured prominently there with her trademark sweet smile. The article Bloggers ‘r’ Us interviewed five Malaysian bloggers – Aizuddin Danian, Suanie, Minishorts, Kenny Sia and myself. This write-up is a refreshing change from the controversy and bad publicity blogs have been getting of late. Good work Micheal!
