1st BAKTI – MIND Conference : ICT for People With Disabilities

The Digital Awakening has not been updated for the past few days and will not be updated for the next few days. I am currently attending the 1st BAKTI – MIND Conference : ICT for People With Disabilities at Bangunan BAKTI Siti Hasmah (BBSH) in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail. This conference runs from December 1 to December 7. Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah will be opening the conference tomorrow.

MIND is the acronym for Malaysian Information Network on Disabilities and is run by one full time staff and a team of dedicated volunteers under the leadership of Assoc. Prof. Dato’ Dr Zaliha Omar. This project is fully funded by BAKTI (Badan Amal Kebajikan Tenaga Isteri-Isteri), the welfare organisation of wives of the Malaysian cabinet members. MIND operates from the MIND Lab on the third floor of BBSH. Volunteers consist of disabled persons and the non-disabled, professionals, undergraduates, post-graduate students and retirees.

This website is created to enable Malaysians with disabilities to lead more independent and productive lives by providing access to information and opportunities relating to health, rehabilitation, education, employment, adaptive technologies and equipments, transportation, barrier-free environment, and government and non-governmental assistance… basically any sort of useful information which will be able help ease the burden and challenges persons with disabilities go through everyday.

Victor Liew roped me in as one of the volunteers a few months back. He is the webmaster and one of the pioneers of this project. My responsibility is to update the News and Events section of the website. Currently the News section is linked to articles in the online version of The Star and New Straits Times website. The Events section is for publicizing seminars, workshops and similar events organised by organisations related to people with disabilities.
