The People Whom God Has Punished

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

This guy was punished by God. He is in a wheelchair now. Stupid fella, kena punished still can smile.
But you have to admit, he is damn good looking hor?

People punished by God with nothing better to do than hold placards and kakaciaociao.

Wah… even more people punished by God.

Aiseh, RapidKL also got bus for them but for show only lar cannot use one.

Dun pray pray, they can fly with AirAsia.

Dato’ Seri Sharizat even officiated a seminar about them. Told you already lor, dun pray pray.

Mai siao, these people who were punished by God were at the Parliament too.

Portable toilets for people punished by God. These people must have a lot to piss.
However, we do not really need these toilets here in Malaysia.
One sewer mouth like Datuk Badruddin Amiruldin’s is enough.

Wheelchair remark: Retract that statement
By : PETER TAN for Independent Living Programme for People with Disabilities Kuala Lumpur

AS a wheelchair user for the last 23 years, I am absolutely upset with Jerai member of parliament Datuk Badruddin Amiruldin for telling fellow-MP Karpal Singh that the latter’s use of a wheelchair is a punishment from God (”Kar-pal: Lawyer wrote part of judgment for civil suit” — NST, Oct 23).
Badruddin’s remark is an affront to all wheelchair users, implying that our condition is a punishment and that we are all sinners.

I have been using a wheelchair long enough to have experienced many times such drivel from holier-than-thou people. People must be educated that being disabled is one of the things that can happen to anybody. People can become disabled. People can become afflicted with diseases. It is part of life.

Perhaps Badruddin seldom meets wheelchair users. As an MP, he should turun padang and meet his electorate to realise that they include disabled people, some of whom are wheelchair users.

He should be working towards empowering disabled people instead of insulting us. After all, he was elected to serve the people and not otherwise.
I call on Badruddin to retract that statement and apologise to all wheelchair users and the disabled community for such an insensitive remark. It does not matter if he was targeting Karpal.

His utterance smacked of insensitivity and ignorance and has insulted the dignity of all wheelchair users.

Uncalled for

THE Society of the Orthopaedically Disabled Malaysia is disappointed with the statement made by Badruddin that the disabled in wheelchairs have been punished by God. The statement was uncalled for.

By ASSOC PROF DR TIUN LING TAfor Society of the Orthopaedically Disabled

THE Malaysian Spinal Injuries Association is outraged at the offensive remark made by Badruddin during the parliamentary session on Oct 22. Referring to MP Karpal Singh, he said: “You are no better calling us (BN MPs) animals. You insult people. Now you are in a wheelchair. God has punished you.”

Disability is not a punishment from God. Badruddin reveals his insensitivity and ignorance in making such a statement. The lack of dignity and decorum shown by several MPs during parliamentary debates recently is appalling.

Instead of abusive personal attacks on fellow MPs, they should focus on fulfilling their responsibilities to their electorate.

Seoul Story - Day 5: September 7, 2007

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

After two days of trying to get a good shot, I finally managed to take several decent images of one of the non-step buses with its ramp deployed. When picking up or dropping off passengers in wheelchairs, the height of the bus is lowered. The entrance/exit side is then “kneeled” to match the height of the kerb and the ramp is deployed. A wheelchair user can then get into the bus with little effort.

We arrived at KINTEX early again. With time in hand, I decided to explore the vast ground outside the complex. When I say vast, it really is. I was also pleasantly surprised by the abundance of accessible parking at the car park. I was in for another pleasant surprise when I caught sight of Ai-Chan getting off one of the shuttle buses. She was scheduled to speak in one of the workshops on that day.

The day passed quickly as I attended one workshop to another. In between, that, I managed to squeeze some time to visit a few of the activities organised on the sidelines to keep delegates entertained while they are not attending any of the workshops. There were clowns sculpting balloons, caricature artists and day tours to the DMZ and other places of interests around Seoul.

The day did not end at the conclusion of all the workshops for the day. Many of us stayed back to attend the Global Summit on Independent Living. Among the highlight of the Summit was the unanimous support by all the delegates present to the proposal by Shoji Nakanishi to establish the Global Independent Living Network. He had earlier this year established the Asia-Pacific Network in Independent Living Centres (APNIL).

I was also one of the speakers at the Summit on IL in Asia-Pacific presenting the development of the Independent Living Movement in Malaysia similar to the presentation I did the day before. My fellow speakers were Udomchok Churut from Thailand, Muhammad Shafiq-ur-Rehman from Pakistan, Abner Manlapaz from the Philippines and Ko Kwan-Chul from Korea.

Although I have conducted trainings and spoke in many seminars on Independent Living, I was as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. Before me were my peers who have experience working in the movement for decades. Compared to them, the two years of my involvement made me feel like a kid on his first day of school. I am grateful for Shoji Nakanishi for giving me the opportunity to address such an esteemed audience.

The last event was a cake cutting ceremony to celebrate the successful conclusion of the Summit where all delegates grouped together before the stage as a sing of solidarity. Sitting there on the stage watching camera flashes going off in all direction and the seeming chaotic celebration of so many disabled persons gave me a sense of hope that we can accomplish great things if we put our hearts to it.

Datuk Badruddin Amiruldin: Using A Wheelchair Is God’s Punishment

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

Yes, my friends, if you are using a wheelchair, know that it is God’s punishment. Persatuan Orang-Orang Cacat Anggota Malaysia (POCAM) President Dr. Tiun Ling Ta alerted me to this piece of news published in the New Straits Times.

An angry Badruddin shouted back at Karpal. “You are no better. Calling us (BN MPs) animals… you insult people. Now you are sitting in a wheel chair. God has punished you.”

NST Online -October 23, 2007: Karpal: Lawyer wrote part of judgment for civil suit

Perhaps it is also God’s punishment to the rakyat that we have such an insensitive and idiotic representative in the Parliament. I would like to remind MP for Jerai Datuk Badruddin Amiruldin that wheelchair users are among the people he is representing too. I do not care whether that insult was directed specifically at Karpal Singh. That very statement alone reeks of discrimination and is an insult to all wheelchair users in Malaysia and the world. MORON!

Kota Kinabalu Trip And Bloggers Meet

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

Wuan and I will be going to Kota Kinabalu for a few days beginning this weekend. We thought we can hit many birds with one stone. We have never been to Sabah and Sarawak before. Wuan’s sister Rosalynn and her family is currently based there and I have not seen her for a while already. This is going to be a part-holiday part-working trip as I will be conducting some accessibility studies for a project that I am working on.

I have read, seen and heard so much about these two states on the other side of the South China Sea – their people, culture, cuisine, flora and fauna. I want to see with my own eyes and experience the vibrant communities that make up part of the Borneo island. I want to smell the salty sea breeze, the fresh rainforest air and see the majestic peak of Mount Kinabalu. I am sure we are going to have an exciting time there.

Moreover, Dee is organising a bloggers meet to coincide with our trip. It has been a while since I last attended any. I am really looking forward to this especially in a land I have never been to before. All are welcome including blog readers. Details of the meet are as follows:

Kota Kinabalu Bloggers Meet
Date: October 28, 2007 (Sunday)
Time: 8.30pm
Venue: Shamrock Irish Pub, Waterfront.
More in Dee’s blog here.

See you guys in Land Below The Wind soon!
