I just had a look at how much money we’ve raised so far and its only USD$550. Thanks to all the nice people here who have pledged their donation.

But frankly speaking I think that amount is pathetic. Between the six of us participants, we get about 10,000 daily visitors to our sites combined. If each of these visitors were to donate USD1, just USD1 (that’s RM3.70, the price of one plate of chicken rice), the volunteers at the Hospite-At-Home program would have enough funds to help the unfortunate for the next 5 years.

Anyway, the Blogathon for charity is in progress till 9pm today. Please head over to BloggersAreMorons.com. You can help keep us awake by telling us a joke or two, or something.

August 6 – A Day To Remember

The date August 6, 1945 will always be remembered as the day an atomic bomb was detonated over Hiroshima killing seventy thousand residents outright. Three days later on August 9, another atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki and forty thousand lives perished instantly. Never again should a weapon of such destructive magnitude be used on another nation whatever the excuse.

However, sixty years down the road several elite nuclear nations now have in their possession an arsenal of nuclear arms powerful enough to annihilate the entire Earth. Irrespective of whether these weapons are used as deterrents against hostile nations or not, they are still a threat to all of us. Improper storage and disposal of the radioactive materials pose an even greater threat by polluting the atmosphere, groundwater and soil.

There is no cure for exposure to radiation. Depending on the extent of exposure, the effects could range from sterility and cancer to death on the other extreme end. As a citizen of the world, it is our right to demand that research in nuclear sciences should be limited to peaceful applications such as medicine. There should never be another Hiroshima or another Nagasaki of August 1945. Innocent citizens should not be punished in place of belligerent governments.

Malaysia is signatory to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons of which 187 other nations are also participants, including the five nuclear-weapon states. The United Nations’ site on Weapons of Mass Destruction has a list of treaties and conventions on other weapons of mass destruction, namely biological and chemical weapons.
