Upgraded To Malaysian Competent Driving License

Malaysian Competent Driving License - Lesen Memandu Kompeten

My Malaysian Probationary Driving License (PDL) expired last Sunday. Thankfully, that was one day after Wuan and I went to Ipoh to celebrate Mother’s Day as Wuan’s driving license had also expired. We stayed home on Sunday as I had to collect my urine for a period of 24 hours for the 24-hour urine creatinine test. Wuan renewed her license at the post office on Monday morning before we went to the hospital.

We had planned to renew and change the license after dropping off the urine and got a blood sample taken. By the time we were done there, it was already twelve noon. We took a chance to go to the JPJ office at Padang Jawa even though it was almost time for lunch break. We reached there at 12.15 pm and quickly made our way into the building, got a queue number and waited. The waiting area was rather crowded.

Before we could even settle down, it was already my turn. Wuan passed my expired license, a colour photograph and RM150 to the officer to renew it for five years. The bottom right edge of the expired license was snipped off and returned. Less than one minute later, the officer presented the spanking new Malaysian Competent Driving License (CDL) to me. I looked at my wrist watch when we got out from the office. It was barely 12.25pm. The speed and ease of renewing the driving license was astonishing.

For the past two years, I had enjoyed the freedom of mobility that came from driving. Wuan and I had done more things, went to more places and travelled further than we could ever imagined. Doing what I am doing now, having a car is not only a convenience but a necessity. If the public transport is accessible, I would not be driving this much, especially around Kuala Lumpur. Ah well…

Nevertheless, driving was one of the things that I thought I could never do again after the accident. Having achieved it, I credit this to the good friends around me who gave me encouragement and support in this endeavour, and especially Wuan who drove me to driving lessons and did everything she possibly could to help me achieve this. Thank you all! You know who you are.

With Victor Chin At DCIM Show 2009

A few days ago, Victor Chin invited me to give a short presentation together with him at the DCIM Show that was to be held at the Mid Valley Convention Centre. The session was on Sunday. When I agreed to his invitation, I was half awake and did not give it much thought. The evening before the session, no thanks to my procrastination, I huriedly prepared a script and did a four-slide PowerPoint presentation.

Victor’s presentation was titled “The Imperfect Body – Challenging some photographic aesthetic values.” He showed a series of photographs of disabled people adapting and coping with their impairments from an artistic point of view. He shared with the audience about the various images that he took from his perspective as a photographer.

It was refreshing in a way because I seldom get to hear an alternative view other than those that are relevant to my advocacy work. I have attended two of his exhibitions on disabled people and it was only at that seminar that I had a better understanding why his photographs were captured from a certain perspective.

Truth be told, up to the time when I was supposed to deliver my presentation, I was unsure if the topic I had prepared was appropriate and whether the audience would fall asleep halfway through. My photography skills still leave much to be desired and there I was, slotted to speak just after an accomplished artist and photographer, and before an audience of serious photographers brandishing intimidating gears.

The title of my presentation was Disabled People and Photography. I spoke about how many disabled people are invisible from society due to the infrastructural barriers and how Victor’s photographs has provided an insight into the seldom-seen facets. I also talked about how I have used photographs for my advocacy work and how cameras are still inaccessible to people with limited hand function.

All in, I hope I had created some awareness among the photographers who sat through the session regarding disability. Photography and disabled people do not really mix well in Malaysia but through Victor’s effort in exhibiting his images on disabled people, disability may just been seen in a different light. Many thanks to Victor Chin for sharing his platform with me and for allowing me to present disability issues to a few more people at the seminar.

Earth Hour 2009 And Old Fart Bloggers Meet

Suanie
Suanie so cute.

It is Earth Hour and the living room light is on. Yawn. I am supposed to be preparing for a presentation for tomorrow but here I am blogging about the Old Fart Bloggers Meet at Starbucks at The Gardens Mid Valley this afternoon. This meet was organised by Dustyhawk to get some of the veteran bloggers to chill out together.

Jason, April, Dystuhawk and KY

Wuan and I arrived just before the appointed time. Dustyhawk, Jason Mumbles and April Pole Dancing Queen were already there. Suanie came a while later with KY. The rest who came after that were (not in chronological order as an old fart blogger like me has poor memory) Eyeris, Redzuan dj PhutureCybersonique, Thomas, Albert Glaring Notebook, Fazri Silencers and FireAngel.

Albert No Money No Honey and Fazri the Virgin.

Chilled out we did, talking about the change of ownership of Project Petaling Street (PPS) among others. Most of us met through organising bloggers meets through PPS. The first bloggers meet that I organised and met other bloggers was way back in January 2005. No doubt it was a small gathering, it was fun meeting some of the bloggers again, some of whom I have not met for a couple of years already. Great work Dustyhawk. Woops, Earth Hour is almost over. That is my cue to end this entry.
