Wuan and I went to pray the Chinese New Year Eve Mass at the Church of Our Mother of Perpetual Help at Jalan La Salle in Ipoh just now. It was presided over by the Reverend Father Joseph Lai and the Reverend Father Joseph Stephen. Surprisingly, the Church was not packed to the brim as I had anticipated. That was my first time praying the Mass on Chinese New Year Eve. When Mass ended, the congregation was presented with ang paus and mandarin oranges to usher in the new year.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all my friends and readers of The Digital Awakening Gong Xi Fa Cai. May the new year brings an abundance of prosperity and joy to you and your family.

Hello Ipoh

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

Ipoh from 5th floor of Hotel Ipoh City

Adriene accompanied us on our Chinese New Year trip to Ipoh with Frosty and Patches in tow. She came back from Japan to spend the festive season with her family here in Ipoh, too. We began our journey at around 10.35am. Traffic was a little heavy but smooth-flowing. Police decoys were placed below some flyovers to drive the message home to speeding drivers. I was given a scare by one of those. No, I was not speeding but the sight of a policeman pointing the radar my way was unnerving. Nevertheless, we made good time and arrived at 1.15pm.

Ipoh is not only famous for its delicious taugeh (beansprout) chicken, pretty girls and picturesque limestone hills. Wuan pointed out to me that Ipoh drivers are not very considerate and can be unforgiving at times. That I found to be too true as they are not fond of giving way like the drivers in Kuala Lumpur do. All the while, I thought Penang drivers were the worst in Malaysia. That aside, I hope to explore a some of Ipoh’s famous landmarks and delicious food while we are here.

Kota Kinabalu - Day 4: October 30, 2007

Sutera Harbour Golf Course

The measure of whether I enjoyed a holiday is by how reluctant I am to leave on the last day. Truth be told, our last day at Kota Kinabalu was with a tinge of sadness. Wuan and I had thoroughly enjoyed ourselves the few days that we were there. There were still so much of this city that we have yet to explore and local delicacies that we have yet to savour.

We had our usual spoilt-for-choice buffet breakfast at Boleh Café. I wondered when I would be able enjoy such a wide spread of delicious food next. Buffet would normally be wasted on me especially with the low-protein and low-everything-else diet that I am on. Although the temptation to eat more than my diet allowed was great, I obediently kept to the recommended limit, almost.

Rosalynn came to join us after breakfast. We went to the hotel gift shop to get more souvenirs. I would love to get some beaded jewelleries and handwoven fabric for keepsakes. Unfortunately, the shop did not carry any that caught my fancy. I regretted not getting it at the zoo’s gift shop which had some very nice designs that I liked when we were there.

Rosalynn had lead us to the Club Lounge on the 11th floor of the hotel when we first arrived to show us that it was one of the 2 places that we could have our breakfasts. The sight up there was spectacular. Wuan and I wanted to capture some shots of the surrounding areas from up there before we left. We spent some time there taking in the sights and quickly filly up our camera’s memory cards with the breathtaking views. We could even see the airport with aircrafts taking off and landing.

Soon it was time to leave and Rosalynn dropped us off at the airport. It was a hive of activity as the check-in area was filled to the brim with people. With some time to kill, we explored the small airport complex. When it was finally time to get to the departure lounge, we were thoroughly annoyed when an AirAsia officer sprang an unwelcome surprise on us.

Kota Kinabalu – Day 3: October 29, 2007

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

Did I say Sabahans are affable people? During the bloggers meet at Shamrock Irish Bar the previous evening, Wei Chuen asked if Wuan and I had anything planned for the next morning. We did not and he invited us to have breakfast with him. He came to pick us up from the hotel and had to wait for a while as we overslept.

Somewhere in Kota Kinabalu. Seamless road and walkway.

We went to this modern-day kopitiam that serves the usual fare that such shops offer. I would have loved to try some of the signature dishes but because of my low-protein and low-everything-else diet, I settled for toasts while Wuan had nasi lemak. Eating has become such a boring event for me now, even when travelling. What I liked most was the accessibility of the place. The road and the entrance to the complex was seamless. If only the rest of Kota Kinabalu were like that.

Just after lunch, Rosalynn took us to the Filipino Market. Wuan wanted to get handicrafts. That place smells! I gather that the open space beside the handicraft market is a fish market and a place where fishing boats land their catch. Fortunately when we were there, the place had already been cleaned up.

While Wuan and Rosalynn shopped along the narrow aisles of the market, I explored the surrounding areas a little. There was no shade outside. The midday sun was bearing down on me but the salty sea breeze was cooling enough to keep me comfortable. Finally, I got my wish of smelling the salty sea breeze! I know I am weird.

Kota Kinabalu is not an accessible city, especially the shopping complexes. Even the one and only accessible toilet in one of the complexes was out of order. Luckily, I went there not to visit these places. I can imagine how difficult it is for the disabled people there to move around. That was one of the reasons why I did not see many disabled people out and about.

Rosalynn invited us to visit her apartment after picking up the Justin and Sabrina from school. As hers is a walk-up apartment, I waited at the poolside while Wuan went up. I was beginning to enjoy the serenity of the place, broken occasionally by low-flying aircrafts, when it began to rain. It rained and rained and rained. If I could, I would have played in the rain. My wheelchair cushion was not up to it unless I fancy forking out RM500 for another piece. The rain only turned into a heavy drizzle 90 minutes later.

Rosalynn and the kids had dinner with us. It was a farewell dinner as we were leaving the next day. Boleh Café has a very nice buffet spread. I could not help but cheat on my diet - well, just a little. It was still early after dinner. Wuan and I went on a walkabout around the hotel grounds. The glow of light reflected on coconut trees, the sounds of lapping waves and the surroundings created an extremely romantic atmosphere. We looked at each other and knew that we would be making another trip to this paradise again.

Kota Kinabalu Bloggers Meet At Shamrock Irish Bar - October 28, 2007

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

If I were to run a marathon like I blog, I would not only finish the race last but finish the race 30 days later. My being on a wheelchair has got nothing to do with it. My procrastination does. I do not know why - every time I start to blog about the Kota Kinabalu Bloggers Meet, I start to itch. No, I am not allergic to my new found KK friends. They are great people, very friendly, very accommodating, very helpful and most of all, fun to be with. I am itching now but I am going to finish this entry for once and for all.

I would like to wholeheartedly thank all who spent the evening at Shamrock Irish Bar with Wuan and me. It was a privilege and honour to have touched base with some of the more active bloggers in Kota Kinabalu. Special thanks go to Dee who organised the meet in conjunction with my first trip to KK which was also our honeymoon. And what an unforgettable honeymoon it was. Wuan and I are already looking forward to another trip to KK. This time, we are going to fly Malaysia Airlines. See you gals and guys again soon!

Some memorable things I remember about the meet:
1. Jacq, Wei Chuen and Charlie dropped in even though they had driven all the way back from Brunei on the same day.
2. Why KinkyJasmines? Because she wanted to attract attention. We were attracted all right!
3. Collin said he saw Wuan and me at Lok Kawi Wildlife Park earlier in the day.
4. Everybody say seeexxx!!!!
5. Jasmine has been blogging longer any of us present that evening. And she is still a teenager!
6. Lence told us the Filipino Market is a good place to get local handicrafts.
7. Joy and Julian got a thing for feeding bottle. Kinky!
